Polymer = the "sophisticated" (read as "dishonest") way of saying plastic.

Why is it I doubt that "polymer" is not sufficiently heat-resistant to avoid leaving residue in the barrel?

I believe it is just the casing that is polymer coated, not the bullet. Apparently to protect the steel casing against rust. Is brass now becoming too expensive for cartridges, or is steel just used to keep costs down? It seems most if not all of cartridges with steel cases come from europe.

It is the case that's polymer coated. The super-duper "polymer" coating replaced the lacquer coating previously used. I don't know if the new polymer coating is any more heat resistant or not. The old lacquer coating could really do a number on a weapon's chamber as it got hot from repeated rounds. Some weapons seem just fine with lacquer coated cases, while others puke pretty badly. One of my ARs pukes on Wolf lacquer coated .223, while my Mini14 runs just fine. May be due to looseness of the chamber, or better extraction from one weapon to another.

It's common to see steel cased ammo from com-bloc countries, including China. Less expensive and more available raw materials (for those countries) than brass, I believe.

I have shot several hundred rounds through my Glock 21. It is dirty like all Wolf Ammo but never had any issues with it.
